A broad range of contemporary art is at the very heart of the Swatch Art Peace Hotel. Its artist residency welcomes known and unknown artists from around the world, to live and work in apartments and workshops on the hotel premises for periods of 3 up to 6 months.
Artists who wish to apply to the Swatch Art Peace Hotel artist residency are invited to register and fill out an application. Only online applications are accepted and will be reviewed.
All applications are reviewed by an international committee whose efforts ensure that a broad range of artistic disciplines, styles and national origins is represented. The selection process aims to integrate artists, known and unknown, from around the world in a spirit of openness and curiosity about creativity in its diverse forms and contexts.
Times of residence are limited to a minimum of 3 months up to a maximum of 6 months; the rotation is designed to facilitate effective interaction among the artists. Joint projects can but do not have to be the creative result of the newly established contacts between artists from different cultures and disciplines, sprouting from individual interests, in which the Swatch Art Peace Hotel team will not interfere.
However the teams in Switzerland and Shanghai will provide support and assistance for flight booking and visa issues.
Artists who are invited to participate in the Swatch Art Peace Hotel will live and work on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the hotel in apartments and workshops made available to them at no cost, including a continental breakfast.
18 modular workshops and apartments can accommodate around 40 artists a year, giving them the unique opportunity to discover Shanghai, to establish contacts with each other and to work on parallel or joint projects of their choosing. 8 workshops are designed so that artists have a working space at their disposal which is separate from their living quarters; 10 incorporate the workshop into the living space. The type of activity and the needs of the artists determine the type of housing to be awarded. Workshop space can also be shared.
As the artists are accomodated at the invitation of Swatch Group, they are only asked to leave a “trace” of their visit. A trace is typically a work of art created by the artist during his or her stay; it is up to the artist to determine what form such a trace will take. The traces will become part of the Swatch Art Peace Hotel collection and will be presented online to the public in our Virtual Museum.
