Cynthia Fusillo exhibition at La Huipilista Artspace
Former artist-in-residence at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel Cynthia Fusillo is showing here exhibition “The Bird in Me Wants to Sing”.
Opening on Saturday at La Huipilista Artspace on January 27, “The Bird in Me Wants to Sing” features work by Barcelona-based artist Cynthia Fusillo. Lyrical, poetic, always textural, often spiritual, hovering between material and ethereal, her works also introduce her as the first artist-in-residence at the Artspace. She brings with her some of the art she created in her six-month art residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai in 2017. With this work, she was included in the First International Paper Exhibit in Shanghai. Paper dresses, shoes, drawings, prints, and paintings will be collaged for wall installations, representing the breadth and depth of experimentation while on that journey.
Fusillo herself refers to her work as autobiographical, because “I use my own body as a model or measure for the dresses and figures. I then “collage” my experiences on them, combining several techniques. I like to work with materials that have already been used and I get so involved in a process such as sewing, burning, printing so as not to think so much, somewhat like a meditation. My goal is to shake up those ideas we have about a particular material or form or its use and take it apart so as to create something new and surprising.”
Exhibition: January 27 to February 18, 2018
Venue: La Huipilista Artspace, Julián Carrillo 1, Colonia Guadalupe
