Ma Jianfeng: Portrait

Former artist-in-residenceMa Jianfeng presents  his new solo exhibition " Portrait ". The exhibition will present more than ten paintings and a set of spatial painting installations and interventions, showing the artist's latest progress in painting practice in the past two years.

The title of the exhibition is " Portrait ", and the actual content of the works involves both human beings and animals. Those gorillas, tigers, and black bears are obtained from the artist's observations in different zoos, while the famous or unnamed characters come from the photos in movies, newspapers and albums that the artist has seen by chance. If there is anything in common among these painting objects that are finally put on canvas, it is that they all arouse the artist's strong interest in a certain gesture or manner; It becomes a subject on the artist's canvas, as if the thing called the spirit is extracted from a specific living situation, and obtained a transcendent development. This exhibition does not focus on the boundary between the human world and the animal world and the resulting references, nor does it talk about anthropology beyond humans or any form of symbolism, but focuses on a painter's gaze, which combines personal vision Experience is regarded as the material of feeling and thinking, and then the language output of painting is output as images. The whole process highlights the meaning and value of painting precisely because it cannot be properly expressed in words.

Ma Jianfeng was born in Zhejiang in 1983. He graduated from the Mural Painting Department of China Academy of Art in 2007, and graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Berlin University of the Arts in 2012 as a master student.
