Tracey Snelling: This is us

Former artist-in-residence Tracy Snelling is presenting her recent works in her solo exhibition 'This is us' at Literaturhaus München (Munich, Germany).

Poetic and sensual, critical of society and playful: These are the installations of the Berlin-based American artist Tracey Snelling. As part of the Munich Literature Festival, she presents her art in Munich for the first time.

Tracey Snelling began as a photographic artist and expanded her work with collages and assemblages. Since 1998, she has been creating house sculptures – miniature buildings that are transformed into scenes of mysterious dramas using collaged photos, videos and lighting effects.

Snelling’s work reflects what is hidden and repressed in our society. It tells stories of people and how they live together in urban, often precarious housing situations. Tracey Snelling’s house sculptures are inspired by existing buildings around the world: in Shanghai, Berlin, Naples or her hometown Oakland in California. The atmospheric features, the realistic details, the minimal alienations create space to raise the question:
How do we live – how do we want to live?

Tracey Snelling is a visual artist from the U.S. currently living and working in Berlin and was in residence from September 2018 to February 2019. Her trace 'Chongqing Nights' can be found in our Virtual Museum.
