Vasken Mardikian: Wanderers

Former artist-in-residence Vasken Mardikian is showing his recent works in his solo exhibition 'Wanderers' at HUHULLI, in collaboration with Yongxing Warehouse of Baispace.

Vasken Mardikian's artistic practice gracefully oscillates between abstraction and figuration, giving rise to enigmatic creatures that serve as metaphors for human beings. With a touch of humor, he captures the essence of contemporary life by expressing absurdity, anxiety, solitude, and other emotions. Vasken's playful yet subtly sarcastic paintings embody the spirit of our time, employing vibrant colors, expressive brushstrokes, and occasional airbrush techniques that evoke the digital tools of today while in direct connection with the rich history of painting, particularly the '80s North American and neo-expressionism movements.

Born in 1975, Vasken Mardikian currently resides and works in Shanghai. He earned his MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2008 with the prestigious Fulbright grant, studying under renowned artists such as Peter Halley, Mel Bochner, and Robert Storr. He has been selected for various artist residencies, including the Nanji Art Studio Residency in Seoul, the Swatch Art Peace Hotel Artist Residence in Shanghai, and the Kulturresidens Tranås in Sweden. His captivating artworks have been showcased in both solo and group exhibitions across Brussels, Paris, New York, Miami, Kyoto, Seoul, and Shanghai.

Vasken was in residence at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel from October 2013 to April 2014.
