"My trace is composed of 6 artworks from my Athena Series.
The title of the artworks is relating to the Series’ theme; working from the bark of the tree and reflecting on our human vulnerability (and the tree vulnerability), our skin becomes a symbol of our protective layers, and of our sensitivity to the world.
The Athena series is an artistic research where I explore my personal vulnerability, question my own identity and my sense of belonging. The platanus is a tree that is very present in the south of France, where I originally come from, and finding it in Shanghai many years later led me to wonder about what makes us, how we define ourselves and what makes our identity.
During my time at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, I collected bark from the platanus trees in the parks of Shanghai. Once collected I recorded them in my sketch book and created paper versions of them. I used these “templates” to create paintings, collages and digital work." (Françoise Isally, 2022)
