„FAUST IN SHANGHAI“ / DARKNESS GIVING BIRTH TO LIGHT

„I am part of the part that once was everything, Part of the darkness, which gave birth to light… „
(Mephistopheles, from „FAUST“ by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

Faust is the example of the failure of Mankind in true progression, an egomaniac of modern times. His greediness is without limit and he sells his soul to the devil even willing to sacrifice the woman he loves. Developing from paralyzing desperation to megalomania, he embodies the narcissistic attitude of a modern man, which first appears as hubris and then as a will to power.

The collages are putting together the symbolistic beauty of the world of Kunqu Opera and the FAUST characters, setting them up in dreamy landscapes full of associations about the story of Faust, Mephisto and Gretchen - meeting each other somewhere between German library, water town Suzhou and the skyline of Shanghai.
