Han Bo: Potato of Plato
Former artist-in-residence Han Bo's solo exhibition 'Potato of Plato' will officially open at Nancy’s Gallery in Shanghai on January 13, 2024.
“People are limited, and free at the same time.” In the process of creation, artist Han Bo starts from a rational perspective and at the same time integrates a perceptual interpretation for "Dionysian tradition” and “Dadaism" ; from the image of "potato" to the eternal tension between speculation and madness, order and chaos, speech and taste, and attains individual freedom.
Artist Han Bo uses mosaics as a basic artistic language. For Han Bo, mosaic is not only a common pattern in residential decoration, but also a propaganda art language widely used from Rome to Byzantium to the Muslim world and even the Soviet Union and the socialist countries of Eastern Europe. Countless small fragments are combined to form a vast object, each of which comprises the functional information of different religions and ideologies, making the picture intriguing.
This exhibition takes the ordinary image of "potato" as the starting point. The "potato" is not only a common grain that grows under the sun, but also can be a cup of wine after nights of distillation and purification; just like people who follows the “spirit of Apollo” to live rationally by the daytime but turn into a member of Dionysus’s mysterious carnival party at night. The coexistence and collision of rationality and irrationality during the creative process is similar to Han Bo's mutual fist of "poetry V.S. philosophy" on the canvas.
