New artist arrival: Chun Hua Catherine Dong

Multi disciplinary artist Chun Hua Catherine Dong from Canada arrives at the artist residence.

Chun Hua Catherine Dong is a Chinese-born / Montréal-based multimedia artist. She received an MFA at Intermedia from Concordia University and a BFA at Visual Art from Emily Carr University Art & Design in Canada. Dong’s artistic practice is based in performance art, photography, video, VR, AR, and 3D printing within the contemporary context of global feminism.

During her stay in Shanghai the artist plans to create a multimedia video installation titled "Lab Fantasia". In this project, she will revisit my childhood memory, imagining the cold lab as a welcome and colorful open playground where animals, flowers, and fruits take the place of humans. Her methodology is to use the lab as a site of inquiry to create an inclusive space that supports diverse beings and gender equality. By combining digital drawings, animated videos, lab equipment, and other found objects, the artist will build a fantasy-fictional multimedia installation that playfully reframes lab aesthetics and gender stereotypes from a woman's perspective, offering new visual narratives that celebrate girl power.
