New artist arrival: Jess Yu
Visual and multimedia artist Jess Yu from China arrives at the artist residence.
Artistic focus: Visual Arts / Video, Multimedia
During her stay Jess Yu will work on her project "Blooming of Shanghai” that seeks to reimagine the urban landscape of Shanghai through the lens of science fiction writer JG Ballard, who was born in Shanghai in 1930. The project draws inspiration from Ballard's literary works, specifically 'Empire of the Sun' (1984), 'The Drowned World' (1962), and 'High-Rise' (1975), weaving together speculative narratives that transcend time and space.
The artist’s project is a fusion of urban speculation, architectural exploration, and narrative illustration. It is rooted in a deep appreciation for Shanghai's historical backdrop and its entwined connection with Ballard's formative years within the city's pre-World War II concession.
