Chinese artist Tang Shu uses direct, stacked brush strokes to liberate his paintings from two dimensions. He depicts natural objects in a concise and spontaneous way and conveys tactile feelings in visual expression. His ‘Beach Series’ was created during the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘Beach No.8’ is a scene in which the artist depicts a beach vacation from the perspective of God. He seems to use the language of a camera to capture the view from afar, focusing on one focal point, and decomposing the sun umbrellas and people into abstract color blocks and strokes. The painting leads viewers to recognize the natural attributes of objects from an omniscient perspective and builds a narrative in a two-dimensional space. ‘Beach No.8’ seems to indicate that the pandemic will eventually pass - and encourages us to look forward to a brighter future together.
