Xinyuan Ma (Green Lava)

"The green lion devouring the sun is a classic symbol in alchemy, representing one of the processes involved in transforming base metals into precious metals. First, I transformed foam boards, used for everyday transportation and insulation, into a singular monolith. Like an alien, it transforms modern, everyday objects into something new and unfamiliar. At the same time, I believe that the result and process of alchemy are simultaneously cumulative. While we may not ultimately obtain a perfect elixir, we have unlocked more mysteries and philosophical insights. Furthermore, creating a new type of work has also personally transformed me.

This piece is the one I spent the longest time working on here. On the one hand, it's part of an exhibition project I collaborated on with the Swatch Art Peace Hotel. On the other hand, I've grown a lot during the process, experimenting with new materials and creative methods. I also think the theme of this piece is incredibly compelling, and it's become part of my artistic growth path during my residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel. In alchemy, the green lion devouring the sun also represents an important alchemical process, meaning my Swatch Peace Hotel Art Residency will become my alchemical dojo." (Xinyuan Ma, 2025)
