Illuminated transitions
"In this transitional peak of my life and career, my residency in Shanghai served as a wellspring of inspiration from my daily observations of the city and its surroundings. Each walk through the vibrant streets, particularly Nanjing Road, filled me with energy and creativity.
The essence of my work emerges from witnessing young women dressing to express their individuality, often seen walking in pairs or small groups. Their presence radiates vibrant energy, highlighted by a kaleidoscope of colors amidst the bustling night lights. The interplay of neon lights captivated me, prompting an exploration of colors and lines to convey a sense of perpetual flow and movement.
My creative process began with calligraphy, where I experimented with lines and circles. These initial works were then scanned and digitally intertwined with photographs I captured during my urban strolls. At the center of the piece is a Gerbera flower, symbolizing innocence, purity, cheerfulness, and loyalty, evoking a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
This artwork reflects my journey, capturing Shanghai's dynamic vibrancy and ever-evolving landscape, infused with personal growth and exploration." (Maryam Nia, 2025)
