Yukes 玉刻 and Bai 白梦薇

"This video was my best attempt to represent my time spent at the Peace Hotel, both with regards to my experience in the space and the current era of my life in Shanghai. I wanted to make best use of as many instruments as possible as I rarely have access to my whole collection in one place, and this resulted in the eclectic tracks you hear in the album, primarily the use of cassette tape loops that begin the first and last song. Track #1+2, Nanjingdong, is about engaging with and reflecting against the scores of people outside, and relocating to the busiest part of Shanghai. Track #3 is a reflection of the physical space of the Peace Hotel, and Track #4+5, St. Bartholomew’s Faire, is a love song for everyone stuck away from home, as I am." (Yukes, 2021)

“Loops Begat All Things” is an audio installation with a functional Walkman cassette player that allows the audience to freely listen using the attached headphones. The cassette within it, containing the artist’s recorded work, is specially-constructed so it loops indefinitely without user interaction. As stated by Ecclesiastes, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again, and there is nothing new under the sun." The loop form imbues this law of the world. The cassette’s cartridge’s collage uses an image of ouroboros in the same shape as the tape within, embedded with Yin and Yang from Tai Chi. This work is the first work of the artist's new creative direction formulated during her residency at Swatch Art Peace Hotel. (Bai, 2021)
