Out of the window
"From May to July 2020, I worked in Shanghai Swatch Art Center for three months. The experience of staying during the epidemic period left me with deep memories. Due to the control of the epidemic situation, the whole building (South Building of Peace Hotel No. 19 on the Bund) belongs to the area with high security level, which is semi closed and all visitors are forbidden to enter. At the same time, during my stay, Nanjing East Road in front of the gate was basically in maintenance. I and other artists were required to go out after 10 a.m. and return before 10 p.m., so I spent most of my time in the studio, and occasionally stood in front of the window to see the lonelier Nanjing East Road downstairs.
The window, at that time, seemed to be a space for me to communicate with the outside world. What I saw, heard, heard and felt came from it. Some people are isolated or even leave because of the virus, and the uninfected people are also "isolated" in a sense. Therefore, I use the method of rubbing to record the space connecting "inside" and "outside", so that special time and space can be preserved in this century old building." (Zhang Qiushi, 2020)
